It’s a Girl!

Meet Little Bell Pepper, due July 17, 2010. Here are Baby Girl’s* first photos.

The ultrasound was done on February 26th. Owen was only slightly impressed. Towards the end he let us know that he thought the baby looked “evil.” (He’d just watch Star Wars for the first time so I think that is what added the word “evil” to his vocabulary.) We had the doctor write down the sex of the baby so we could find with just the three of us. I opened the envolope (in the car. That’s as long as we could wait) and said, “It’s a girl.” Owen said, “NOOOOOOOO…..IT’S A BOY!” It took him a good week to get over the shock. Don and I are thrilled and I’m happy to let you know Owen has warmed to the idea of a sister :).

This pregnancy is just flying by. I won’t say that I’m reveling in my elastic waisted maternity jeans (because I’m not) but there have been several factors that have made this pregnancy enjoyable.

I’ll put my midwife Nicole at the top of this list. Having experienced both an OBGYN and a midwife I’m amazed at the difference in care, attention, and dare I say, respect. Respect in the since that Nicole is much more forthcoming with information, instead of Don and I having to remember to ask the right questions. I’m Morgan, a person, a mother, a wife, and I’m pregnant. I’m not Uterus with Fetus, belonging to a Patient named Morgan. And this is coming from someone who LOVED her doctor during her first pregnancy. All I can say is that my midwife Nicole knew more about me in my first two visits then my OBGYN knew about my in months and months of visits. I don’t want to get too preachy, but I will recommend watching, “The Business of Being Born” and reading “Ina May’s Guide to Natural Childbirth.” (The former because positive birth stories are seriously lacking in our culture.)

Next on the list: Yoga. I’m pretty sure it has stopped some of the aches and pains I was starting to experience. For example, my hips don’t hurt nearly as much at night when I’m sleeping. Sleeping is used loosly here. Maybe “trying as best I can to sleep when I can’t lay on my back and there is a human being residing in my midsection” is a better description. Not to mention, sharing (complaining) about pregnancy with other pregnant women is totally theraputic. My mom and dad have gifting me more classes and I’m sooooo grateful. I’m not sure what I would do if I couldn’t go.

I am fortunate to know some pretty amazing women, a few whom are also pregnant and due around the same time! We were still fairly new to the area when Owen was a baby and having a larger network of folks to talk to this time around has made a big difference.

I’m going to add my doula McKenzie to this list as well. We just hired her, so I’ve only met her once but just the knowledge that she’ll be there when I’m in labor is an amzing comfort. She is very intuitive and reminded Don and I a lot of Nicole. They both have backgrounds in social work (McKenzie currently has her own practice) so I wonder if this has anything do do with their similar demenors.

Have a wonderful Sunday y’all. I’m going to go back to enjoying this rainy day drinking my Mother To Be tea, eating my homemade wholewheat, wheat bran and wheat germ bread, listening to my iPod on shuffle and patting myself on the back for my impecable taste in music before I get ready for church. Maybe pregnancy isn’t so bad.

*We have picked out a name, but we are still deciding on the spelling. Not to mention the mixed reactions we’ve gotten have made us question or decision to tell folks (which hasn’t changed the name thank-you-very-much), so I’ll keep you posted.
