He’s a funny, funny man.

My Aunt Janna sent this one out today and the answers sent back by my Uncle Sammy were a hoot and a half. He’s a funny, funny man. So here are some highlights. The pee-your-pants funny parts (#8 and #43 for example) and the just plain true parts (#14 and #17, minus Regan. haha.) I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing with ya’ll for posterity…. oh wait, my mom and my MIL are the only folks that read this thing. Hi guys!

Sammy you really aught to start a blog. Yes, it’s totally dorky, but your family would love it.  A Holbrooks’ family collaboration wouldn’t be too shabby either.

Hey, here goes. Guess you’re s’posed to copy and paste this and send it to
everybody else and me.

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
Mom made a great issue of the fact that I was named after Samuel and
David, a King and a Judge. She should have lowered her expectations and
named me Elvis Judy.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
The evening of November 4th.
Although I did tear up a bit this morning when I saw that Ford, GM, and
Chrysler stocks are being outperformed by Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Three, and a really cool grandson who thought it was okay to whup it out
and pee in Wal-Mart the other day when his Mom wasn’t looking. He picked
up several new fans. Grandparents love this stuff. It’s payback time.

8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
Yes, and doggedly determined to keep my testicles as well.

9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
I’ll only get upside down for money, and I’ll only jump off a bridge when
I call it quits.

12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
I was until KTW took my muscles. Until I make my comeback, I’ll just have
to B.S. my way out of everything.

14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Whether or not they smile at strangers.

17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST?
Mom, Dad, Cecil, Fogelberg, Ronald Reagan, and the drummers from The Who
and Led Zeppelin.

21. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
Local weather report. Brrr. Temps are lower than Barney Frank’s belly.

23. FAVORITE SMELLS?
Barbecued brisket, rain in Texas, a baby’s breath.
Least Favorite? The French Quarter after Fat Tuesday.

24. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
Lawrence last night, and this morning, #4.
As in, “If you’d like to speak to someone who gives a rat’sass, please
press number four.”

26.  FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH?
Football. Also, Olympic gymnastics if they had cheerleaders… or would
that be redundant?

38. LEAST LIKELY TO RESPOND. The snoops at Google. Hi Google!

43. ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES?
Beatles. Mick Jagger’s a weeny. That’s right, I said it.

44. WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME? New York City.
New York City?!?!?

45. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
Are drummers talented, or are we just the guys who hang out with real
musicians?
Am I a good Publisher, or just a frustrated novelist? Hmmm.
Unlike most Americans, I do enough homework to know who’s responsible for
what. I guess that counts for something.

46. WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Terrell, By God Texas.

But Why?

47. WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK?
Anyone whose answers are accompanied by a new riding lawnmower.

Hey, everybody have a Gay Christmas and a Merry New Year!! Or whatever.

Adventures in Potty Training.

Owen pooped on the toilet today! I am experiencing the kind of joy only a parent can know 🙂 He didn’t let me know in advance that he had to go to the bathroom (baby steps) but he was making the “serious face” and he let me set him on the his Cars potty seat. ALRIGHT OWEN! I sat on the floor and I read him potty books until he was finished. This one is of Owen’s favorites (Thanks Ms. Jen). It’s cute.

Bottle Caps and Egg Cartons.

Eventually this can be used as a memory game. In the meantime Owen likes to match-up the pictures on the bottle caps while they are all facing up.

Last week we turned the top of an egg carton into a glider. Launching it off of the loft was a fun activity on a very rainy day.

The next day we turned the bottom portion into a catipillar. (We only had Crayola poster paint. As you can see it chipped off the styrofoam pretty quickly.) While reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar Owen feed the pages of the book to his new friend.

Feeling a little country.

Nothing sounds quite as good on a  rainy day as country music. After our little adventure this morning Owen and I listed to some music while I made lunch. Here are the albums of the day:

Lucinda Williams, Happy Women Blues
Alison Krauss and Union Station, New Favorite
Gillian Welsh, Time (The Revelator)
Ryan Adams, Heartbreaker
Chris Castle, Hollow Bones in Monotone
Freakwater, Old Paint

Chris Castle is from my hometown. Here is a video from his first album (Hollow Bones in Monotone). I’ve listened to this record a countless number of times, and it gets better and better with every listen. (Owen like it too).

The Bottle Let Me Down, Songs for Bumpy Wagon Rides. I downloaded this off of eMusic this morning. Leave it to Bloodshot Records to record an alt-country album for kids. Makes me smile.

Rainy Days.

dscn1857

So much for the nice weather.  Low 40’s and raining. While there was just a drizzle Owen and I spent the morning walking around the neighborhood stomping in mud puddles. It took us about an hour to walk seven blocks. I don’t think Owen missed a single puddle and his match box cars got to go for a ride over the brick sidewalks. Lots of great photo-ops. But Don would’ve killed me if I took our camera out in the rain.

Last Thursday we had a cold pouring rain (not fun for puddle stomping) so we made tents. Prototype one was constructed out of sheets and the kitchen table and chairs. It was fun while it lasted. Owen didn’t know to be cautious when running in and out so the roof eventually collapsed. For Version 2.o I cheated and brought out the Ikea Igloo and tethered a sheet to the couch and loft steps to make a bigger entrance. Owen loved it. This is how we spent the better part of the day.

Unseasonable Warm.

I don’t need a White Christmas. I’m from Northern Ohio and I’m not afraid to admit that I’m a total freeze baby. Today’s high? Sixty eight degrees! In December!! Owen and I played catch at Patrick Henry Memorial Park across the street. It was gorgeous. When nap time rolled around I was not ready to go back inside.
